Amy Greer

Musician, Pianist, Teacher

Recognized for her creative approach to traditional piano pedagogy, Amy Greer has maintained successful piano studios in New Mexico, Massachusetts, Texas and Missouri. A frequent contributor to various music publications, she has been a regular columnist for American Music Teacher and her article entitled “Risking Aunt Rhody,” was named AMT’s Article of the Year in 2001. She gives workshops on issues of pedagogy, creativity, performing and practicing, and coaches other musicians and teachers on such topics.

Together with composer Dennis Alexander, Ms. Greer is the co-author of the book Repertoire by Rote: Seven Pieces to be Taught Without Traditional Notation. She is an active performer, both as a soloist and in collaboration with singers and instrumentalists, and has served as an accompanist at Dallas Baptist University, Texas Christian University, Texas Wesleyan University, The Boston Conservatory and the University of New Mexico. She has performed with the Santa Fe Symphony, the New Mexico Symphony Orchestra and the New Mexico Philharmonic, and she is the pianist (and sometimes alto!) for Quintessence: Choral Artists of the Southwest. She is the co-founder of Movable Sol, a New Mexico-based house concert series, with cellist Joel Becktell.

Ms. Greer holds a Master of Arts in Educational Psychology from the University of New Mexico, a Master of Music degree in Piano Performance from the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music and a Bachelor of Music degree in Piano Performance from the University of Missouri-Columbia. Her teachers have included Jane Allen, Joanne Baker and William Westney. She shares her home, garden and brightly colored studio with her husband, two cats and a thousand books and plants.
